Australian-born, LA-based actor and musician Nicholas Hamilton has released his sparkling new single In Line, a song about coming of age that was two years in the making. As a young actor and musician, Nicholas took the plunge and moved from his home in Byron Bay to Los Angeles. As an actor he has starred alongside Nicole Kidman, Joseph Fiennes, Hugo Weaving and Jessica Chastain to name a few, and has an ever-growing list of successful films under his belt, including roles in global blockbusters such as It, It: Chapter Two, Captain Fantastic, Strangerland and more.
In Line is evocative of Elle King, it’s modern pop but with a slightly retro twist that feels perfectly unique to Nicholas Hamilton. There’s plenty of room in this expert arrangement for Nicholas’ voice to soar and it’s that voice that takes centre stage even as the beat ramps up and the chorus fills out. Nicholas answers a few questions about the single for Hi Fi Way.
How has the build-up been leading up to the release of the single?
It was wild. The whole build-up I was moving from the US back home to Australia, so I was in hotel quarantine when the song came out. Definitely not typical.
Was the process of making your single as challenging as you thought?
Less challenging, more just fun. I love making music, so recording and producing In Line, along with the rest of the EP, was an incredible experience.
Sonically, how would you describe your music?
I’ve always called it a kind of “bedroom pop”. I’m not sure if I even know what that means anymore. I know my music is easy to listen to, catchy, boppy. Songs you can bop your head to in the car or scream to while laying in bed staring at the ceiling.
Who would you consider to be the biggest influence on your music and why?
Life experiences. Before 2020, I was a recluse. I hardly ever went outside or hung out with friends. Now that it’s allowed again, I want to go out and experience everything I can possibly experience, with the people I love experiencing things with.
Best piece of advice you have been given?
It was never really outright told to me, but my family’s vibe has always been to stay humble. That, if you have a big head, even if you succeed it’ll feel lesser.
What is the Nicholas Hamilton life story?
Where do you want me to start? It’s been a fun 21 years. Grew up in a small town, started acting at 11, got some small jobs, got a bigger agent, got some bigger jobs, moved to LA at 18, started writing music, COVID hit, I stopped acting because of it and started releasing the music I’d been writing, now I’m back in Australia, ready to expand my music fanbase over here!
Are you looking to tour more broadly?
That’s partly why I’m back in Australia! I want to perform my originals for real life people, and that’s not exactly a viable option in the US just yet. I’m very excited.
What’s next for Nicholas Hamilton?
New songs! I’m back in Australia now for a little bit so I’m looking forward to expanding my fanbase here, possibly a fun little tour?? I’m taking it all a day at a time, I’m as excited to see what’s next as you are.
