The Avalanches: Since I Left You, Live

As the inaugural Luminary Artists in Residence, The Avalanches come to Illuminate Adelaide with five exciting events, including a world premiere live performance of their classic debut album Since I Left You with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra at Adelaide Entertainment Centre.
At the turn of the millennium, Since I Left You set the precedent for dance music and inspired a generation of music makers to come. Meticulously crafted by combining over 3,500 vinyl samples to develop a unique sound, it was named one of the best albums of 2000 by critics around the world and named in the Top 20 of Rolling Stone’s Greatest EDM Albums of All Time. For Illuminate, the evening will feature live orchestral arrangements of iconic tracks like Frontier Psychiatrist, Since I Left You and Electricity, it will be a celebration of life, love and music.
Alongside this performance at Adelaide
Entertainment Centre, Robbie Chater and Tony Di Blasi can be heard in conversation with Double J’s Zan Rowe and collaborator Jonathan Zawada, unpacking the bands past, present and future to kick off MAAD (Music & Art After Dark), Illuminate’s massive closing weekend block party in the West End. Sydney-based artists Michaela Gleave and Fausto Brusamolino, bring Messages of Hope and Messages of Love to the South Australian skies as part of The Avalanches’ residency.
A visual poem born out of the uncertainty of 2020, the work uses beams of light that reach up to the sky to share Morse code messages of hope, solidarity and love. These messages are crowdsourced from the public and sent to the heavens. Audiences can send their messages to Gleave, Brusamolino and band members Chater and Di Blasi for inclusion, with submissions open in May.
Robbie Chater and Tony Di Blasi also turn their gaze to the visual art world, to bring audiences an exhibition showcasing the works that influenced the pair’s most recent Australian Music Prize-Winning album We Will Always Love You.
Ghost Stories, featuring works by Jonathan Zawada and The Experience Machine (T.E.M), is an exhibition offering a rare insight into the album’s cosmic and meditative visual language.
The Avalanches will then close Illuminate Adelaide with an electrifying DJ set on the Outdoor Music Stage as part of the MAAD West End (Music & Art After Dark) block party on Saturday 31 July.
