Tanya George has been hard to miss around Melbourne over the last few years; a stunning 4.5 octave range of looping vocals swelling in the skyscraper city and a forest of luscious curls bouncing through her vocal driven beats, George’s presence is undeniable. Though Covid has halted the street shows, George has been marking her mark in the media with her upcoming EP, Normality. The title track and single is about questioning what is normality? What is the normal anymore in society, in our lives? What is a normal life? Am I normal? What is normal? Over to Tanya George to tell Hi Fi Way more about her music.
Have you been happy with the feedback from the EP Normality?
Yes – people have been legends! I’m always grateful for how people respond.
How did you celebrate release day?
I went out to a bar in Hampton and had a few wines followed by pizza!
On reflection is there anything you would do differently next time?
Absolutely! I struggle with listening back to songs after they have been released because there is always something I would like to change. Depends what side of the bed I wake up on. I think I’d like to go with less structure and incorporate some more natural sounds from the streets as the studio doesn’t provide the busking rawness but studio richness.
Normality is an interesting EP title, did you want your fans to think what is normal?
I thought the title suited the EP because of how I made this EP- is not the normal traditional way to create music. I was questioning a lot about my life and what a normal life is and then 2020 hit in the most peculiar way and it all just blended. I did want my listeners to be like “oh this isn’t your normal everyday EP” haha to make them challenge the exact theme; What is normal?
Did COVID add another layer of complexity in getting it done?
Lucky for me, I got everything complete prior to COVID but completing my album, the next release, caused a 7 month delay as the studio had to close and I couldn’t see anyone. The only other complexity was not being able to gig or busk, that was tricky!
Sonically, how would you describe your style?
Bold, raw, eclectic and soulful. I definitely take influences from all sorts of styles. I love Ariana Grande’s vocal production in her music but I love old jazz harmonies then add a little electro vibes with some soul from my heart and you have fun, different, spicy experimental electro- pop soul music!
Have you learnt alot about yourself this year and your own resilience?
Absolutely, I learn every single day. I try to grow and learn as much as I can. I always remind myself that I am a human being and to keep going on the path I am on.
Are there plans for new music next year?
Absolutely, in fact there are plans for a big debut album and getting the band back on board! As well as more vocal looping originals and potentially involving choirs.
How excited are you about the prospect of touring?
I am a super innovative person! I can’t wait to go back to tour life, even if it means readjusting my shows to a new COVID safe format to make it all happen again. That is no problem for me. I already have a bunch of cool ideas to make it fun!
What’s a fun fact that your fans wouldn’t know about Tanya George?
They may have seen on my Instagram but I have a four year old bunny called Hip Hop and his nickname is Hippy. He kisses me a lot.
