Garrett Kato is kicking 2020 off in a big way with a new single Breathe It In with features Julia Stone making for an awesome pairing. Garrett answers a few questions for Hi Fi Way about the collaboration and what’s in store for this year
How has the build-up been leading up to the release of the single?
It’s been great, on holidays in Canada! So I’m not sure if it’s a build up, but I am excited to release it.
Was the process of making your single as challenge as you thought?
Writing and recording the track took close to two years. The demo spent some time on a hard drive and I unearthed the song after my management asked about it. It was pretty quick once I had a second impression of the song and had Julia’s input. It was a really enjoyable experience.
Sonically, how would describe your music?
It’s primarily acoustic singer songwriter music, but has elements of lots of other genres and sounds. I write, record and mix all my own music so it’s very adventurous productions at times.
Who would you consider to be the biggest influence on your music and why?
Family and nature often give me lots of stories to write about.
How would you describe your musical journey so far?
Take it like a strange journey. The decisions I’ve made in my life, for better or worse, haven’t necessarily been conventional to society. It was good though. I’d love for people to know it’s possible to show up somewhere new with nothing but a bag of clothes, a backpack, and a guitar and end up with a life you love. That’s my story.”
Are you looking to tour more broadly?
Last year I toured Europe twice and loved it, so I’m thinking I’ll definitely be back hopefully this year.
What’s next for Garrett Kato?
I have lots of new music recorded so I’ll be releasing quite a bit this year and a few tours probably.
What was it like collaborating with Julia Stone on this track?
We spent two days together writing in my tiny house in Byron Bay two years ago. She was in Byron recording the Snow record with Angus and had a few days off. We were total strangers the first day of writing so we spent a lot of time getting to know one and other. We both were in what seemed like transitional periods of our lives. Me being a new father and her balancing some normality with an ever-changing life on the road. The song was born out of some old and new stories we’d been harbouring for some time and they came to life in this song.
