Exciting newcomer Mr Big Stuff has announced his brilliant, hooky debut single I Need Space, featuring synthpop auteurs Strange Talk which is out now. Mr Big Stuff, otherwise known as Gregory Truman, has also announced a quirky and fun video clip to accompany the track, created in collaboration with Lionel Towers (Gypsy & The Cat) and Andrew Mortlock (Cookin’ on 3 Burners, The Griswolds). I Need Space is a witty, poppy introduction to this up and coming Australian hip hop artist. Gregory Truman tells Hi Fi Way more about Mr Big Stuff.
How has the build-up been leading up to the release of the single?
The build up has been pretty exciting. I Need Space has been in the works for about four months now and it’s great to get it out there. I’ve found it to be a great experience and hopefully the first of many.
Was the process of making your single as challenging as you thought?
I always enjoy the song writing process so I think of it more as an accomplishment than a challenge. If there was anything that was challenging it was making sure the verses conveyed the correct message as withing the song.
Sonically, how would describe your music?
I’d describe it as, funky, rhythmic and engaging
Who would you consider to be the biggest influence on your music and why?
My biggest influence on my music would be my family & friends. Without them I wouldn’t have the experiences that I have to write about. In the form of a music artist it would be either Lupe Fiasco or Nelly because of there melodies, hooks and great rhymes throughout.
Best piece of advice you have been given?
Live life today because tomorrow it may be gone.
What is the Mr Big Stuff life story?
My life story! We could be here a while so I’ll give you the brief version. I was born in Melbourne, Australia and grew up in a middle income household. I’ve always had troubles with weight and have struggled with that in my life hence why the name Mr. Big Stuff suited me so well.
My interest in music started through my mum who played every soul, funk, Motown, disco and R&B track she could find. I was about twelve when I wrote my first song. It was pretty deep and even I didn’t understand the concept of what I was writing about. It just came to me and I had to write it down.
Over the years I’ve tried a few times to do music more seriously but always ended with a dead end. Around three years ago with a catalogue of three hundred song ideas I thought enough is enough. I need to really do something with these things and so the journey to Mr. Big Stuff began.
From that stage to now I have grown as an artist in leaps and bounds and can see my skill set getting stronger with each song I write. Also since then, I have lost a fair bit of weight and hopefully that journey continues along with the music.
So that’s the short version, one day I’ll sit down and write it all out for you all!
Are you looking to tour more broadly?
I sure am, I’m looking at touring in the coming months and would love to tour wherever they’ll have me.
What’s next for Mr Big Stuff?
Next for Mr. Big Stuff is an EP released and touring. The EP will hopefully be out before the end of the year.
