Magpie Diaries Tour Dates
After extensive summer touring around Australia, playing alongside good friend Steve Smyth and book ended by acclaimed performances at Woodford Folk festival in Qld and Nannup Festival in WA, Hunter Valley based soul country believers, Magpie Diaries launch out with the second official single from their debut full length release Sanctuary.
Alongside the quirky single comes the announcement of further regional touring, with visits to Tamworth, Darwin, Alice Springs, Adelaide and Melbourne planned for July & a show in Sydney on June 20 with support from Katie Brianna & Kyle Jenkins (Suicide Swans).
The latest single Honey has been added to ABC Country, and is accompanied by another charming video, one which paints a seemingly biographical picture of the wholesome roots of where the song comes from.
For those who haven’t got their hands on a copy of the liner notes inside the vinyl record, the story of Honey comes from the mind of Magpie as he passed by an elderly man selling Honey by the side of the road outside of Singleton, one of the countries’ most heavily industrial regions of NSW.
“A few years earlier I was travelling through parts of Africa and marvelling at the simple nature of people farming, making things and surviving off the land they had come to occupy. Essentially, I came home and put that philosophy into play with the creation of The Gum Ball.“
‘When I saw this old fellow, parked up with his beautiful canary yellow Datsun station wagon selling honey, I couldn’t help but think he must have made some smart decisions in life. He looked happy, I couldn’t help but think that this elderly man could be me one day.”
Sanctuary delivers Magpie’s story via smooth soul country, with subtle flourishes of psychedelic rock & roll attributed to great acts such as Grateful Dead, Neil Young & Van Morrison, alongside modern artists like Cat Power & My Morning Jacket. Sanctuary is a journey through the past and into the future, where one can still roam with wild exuberance. Where the desire to perform is matched with the desire to escape and unravel inside the music.
