Ivan Aristeguieta

“Congratulations! You’ve made it to The Fourth Floor!” That’s what Venezuelans say when someone turns forty, and this is the year that Ivan needs to get out of the lift and see what all the fuss is about. He’s halfway to the rooftop party, and too far up to take the stairs back down. Call it a mid-life crisis or mid-life celebration, Ivan is livin’ la mid-vida loca.
After a successful 2018 World Tour, Ivan is ready to take his life to the next level. Going up! As seen on Have You Been Paying Attention? and star of ABC TV’s Lost in Pronunciation. Ivan answers some questions about his show starting this week.
You’re here for the Adelaide Fringe. How many times does it make it now performing at the Adelaide Fringe?
I lived in Adelaide for three years, it’s where I started doing comedy in English for the first time. This is my sixth Adelaide Fringe Festival.
Congratulations on turning forty or I should say on making it to the Fourth Floor! How did you come about writing for your new show about this topic?
My shows are like a yearly report of my life to my audience. Turning forty has been the thing I’ve been reflecting on the most. I had to write a show about it. Also, I haven’t made it yet. My birthday is in August.
You haven’t been in Australia very long and English is your second language. Do you find there’s a lot of funny stories for your shows just getting through the language barrier?
Absolutely, I’ve been seven years in Australia and I’m still struggling with the colloquialisms. Miscommunication is great for comedy.
Considering your background is in food and beverages back in your homeland of Venezuela, is comedy an easier occupation?
I used to be a brew master. Drinking beer and telling jokes is still part of my job but I don’t have to deal with morning meetings, productivity, quality, maintenance and bosses.
What are you looking forward to the most about performing in Adelaide?
Late night pies with my mates after the shows in any of the 24 hour bakeries in town.
What can audiences expect from your show?
I’m loving this show so much. I made sure is packed with jokes and laughter. I’m having as much fun as the audience is.
