Lakyn

Lakyn is on the rise after receiving airplay on triple j’s Home & Hosed for his single West which is about Lakyn’s own ambition and self-worth – it’s about not getting too comfortable in any one place, and always pushing yourself to work harder, to do better. Spaghetti Western guitars rattle around the song like they’re sound-tracking a standoff between two sides of Lakyn himself. Having toured recently with Vera Blue, Lakyn has also announces his own run of headline shows along the East Coast in October. Hi Fi Way: The Pop Chronicles did a quick Q&A with Lakyn.
How exciting is it building up to this tour?
I’d say on a scale of 1 to excited, I’m definitely excited. After finishing a tour with Vancouver Sleep Clinic and with three shows left of the Vera Blue tour it’s safe to say I’m ready for a few shows of my own.
What can music lovers expect on this tour?
Just some good quality, wholesome entertainment intended for their utmost enjoyment and songs, songs that I’ve been waiting to share with them. Also this will be my first tour with my drummer, we have turned it up a notch. Good times are imminent.
How has the tour with Vera Blue gone?
It’s been such a good time getting around Australia over the past two months playing in front of some great crowds and all the good times that go on behind the scenes makes it something to remember.
Have you been surprised how receptive her fans have been to you?
It has been a warm response indeed, I was surprised at first but after three shows every week in different cities that fades into more of a humbling feeling.
Congratulations on the single West, did you have that feeling that you nailed it?
Thank you. West sums up a lot about me and is filled with some important lessons I learned over the past few years so yeah, nailed is a fitting statement.
What’s the story behind the single?
West represents a kind of way of life I was living a few years ago that helped me find myself, that way of life was mostly being comfortable being alone in the world, being able to live without worry and just trust that it’s all going to be fine.
Do you have plenty more ideas for an album or EP?
The world is an interesting place and people are complex, my ideas come from my experiences of the two but also a place in my imagination. I think there’s always going to be something worth writing about but to answer your question, yes I do have a few ideas in the works.
What is the biggest lesson learnt so far?
That one simply cannot tour on a carb and fast food diet, fruit and veggies are friends.
Biggest music inspiration and why?
Some artists inspire me as a person, others as a writer and others as a musician so I can’t fairly answer that one.
Where to next beyond the tour in October for Lakyn?
This tour is just the beginning. Can’t wait for 2018, you’ll have to wait and see.
