How does it feel to be a part of the Adelaide Fringe?
To be part of the Adelaide Fringe has been a long time goal of mine, so to finally be playing my music in such a creative environment where I’ve had some of my most memorable living arts experiences is a dream come true for me. My love for the Fringe runs deep and will always be a huge part of my life as an Adelaide born artist.
How would you describe your music?
My music is my diary. My life experiences in song line, my songwriting style is very raw and I have never been able to define my genre because I don’t have one. I’m widely eclectic and draw my muse from multiple sources, whether that be my favourite artists, styles or songs. I just want it to sound good to myself, and enjoyable to my audience.
What can audiences expect when they hear you perform at the Garden?
As I mentioned, I’m very eclectic in my style and genres and will be drawing on the energy of my favourite artists, re-imagining my old tunes into my new mature sounds, and even covers of some well-known favourites.
Which song is your favourite to sing in your show?
If I get to play it, it would be Reason To Stay, written in 2009 by my late best friend Sarah Martin. When we were young, we were fortunate enough to be a part of the Living Arts program with Life Without Barriers and got to write and record our first ever original songs. Unfortunately, Sarah died by suicide in 2014 at the age of just fifteen and this song represents a lot of the feelings youths in state care go through. I may be biased because I love this song so much because it was written by her, but it really is incredibly well written, especially for a child so young.
How important is it to showcase Indigenous musicians?
Australia is riddled with talent to the nines. Look at the likes of BARKAA, Electric Fields, Nancy Bates, and Bec Gollan. These are incredible Australian Indigenous artist that should have been recognised for their talents a whole lot sooner, to be an emerging Indigenous artist is a real blessing, and to be able to showcase the talents of our people is even more important.
Getting into the Fringe spirit which show in The Garden is your Pick for the Fringe?
I missed out on Limbo last time so, I think that’s definitely on the cards. Any of the Darkfields interactive shows were incredible and I absolutely loved them last year. So, in saying that, Seance would be my Pick for the Fringe this year.
