Emma Donovan “Til My Song Is Done”

Following a nearly decade-long collaboration with The Putbacks, Emma Donovan returns with a new solo album. Her first since 2004.

Til My Song Is Done is an album “honouring that legacy of our family country music ways,” Donovan states. Prior to her soul-funk and gospel production with The Putbacks, the Black Arm Band and Stiff Gins, a young Donovan used to sing two-song sets of country classics on stages across New South Wales. Country music is the foundation of her being. Bringing that to the forefront of her artistry heralds a full-circle moment.

Across eleven tracks, including collaborations with likewise iconic Australian musicians, themes of family, country, identity and love are shared.

Change is Coming (featuring Liz Stringer) is a solid opening track. Integrating bluegrass banjo, surf-guitar riffs and powerful lyrics including, “Change is coming/ I have to believe it,” it is an earworm waiting to happen.

Singles Blak Nation, Lovin’ Looks Like, and the title track, Til My Song is Done, capture the quintessential Donovan sound but across multiple tempos. I’ll Shine on You is a masterclass in less is more. Simplistic lyrics paired with harmonies and rich instrumentals create a satisfying mid-album moment.

Bringing All the Lovin’ proclaims ‘Country’ loudly and proudly. As does Sing You Over (featuring Paul Kelly), an elegant whirling vision bathed in harmonica. In contrast, Liquid Gold is an 80s country-pop instant classic that will have you wanting to line-dance all night. While the longing of Spring Thing complements Away and its enchanted country guitar riffs and luscious rich vocals.

Album closer Yibaanga Gangaa (Sweet By & By) is a country-fuelled traditional language song. One that rounds out this album by highlighting Donovan’s overall intent to move towards a future of strength for all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women in the Australian music industry and beyond.

Country music may be the flavour of the moment (looking at you, Beyonce), but it is something that pulsates deep within the heart of Donovan. Til My Song Is Done is an introspective project that transcends a style of music and captures the unquestionable deadly essence of Emma Donovan.
