After announcing their arrival with debut single, Dirt in 2023 and more recently lighting up the stage at Laneway Festival alongside the likes of Faye Webster and Angie McMahon, Meanjin garage quintet, Worm Girlz return with new single, Cool Girl. Cool Girl finds the band at a breaking point, taking a bold stance against toxic culture and pointing the finger at those who turn a blind eye to the questionable actions of their friends. Within the scathing walls of the song lies not a vulnerable plea for change, but an adamant urge to speak up and hold people accountable for their behaviour.
Recorded and mixed by Lucas Montgomery, Cool Girl is ferocious in its delivery, with commanding bass rhythms and a call-to-arms style chorus that captures the band’s utter frustration. “Don’t let them get away with it” they collectively implore, creating a mantra that demands to be sung out loud. Having made an immediate impact on the live circuit, Worm Girlz have not only hustled homemade worm merch but firmly established their stage presence alongside acts like Teen Jesus, Seaside and more. With the release of Cool Girl the band definitively stamp their identity on the scene, fostering an inclusive environment for their rapidly building fanbase. The band answer some questions about the single.
Cool Girl is out now and has a powerful message. Can you tell us about the song’s meaning?
Cool Girl empowers listeners to raise their bars when it comes to bystander intervention. Worm Girlz have had enough of hearing excuses made for turning a blind eye to inappropriate behaviour and implore you to stop letting them get away with it. ‘Cool Girl’ is a call to action wrapped in brutal guitars and unapologetic lyrics.
You recently played at Laneway Festival!? What was your favourite experience from the day?
Watching people run across the hall to get to the front of our stage while we were just playing music with our best friends? Pretty wormin’ awesome.
Were there any specific musical influences or artists that inspired Cool Girl?
Sonically we are constantly inspired by rock bands such as Paramore, Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers, and Evanescence.
What is your favourite song to play live?
Jackie 👁️🗨️🫀👀
Is there anything else that inspires your music? (Fashion, art, photography, etc?)
The beautiful dirt beneath our feet.
What do you all do when you’re not creating music together?
We love to immerse ourselves in the local live music scene and support our friends together when we can! When we’re not wriggling on the D-Floor, we love to be cozy wormz, cuddled up around a good board game or battling it out on Rainbow Road.
Do you have any pre-show rituals?
“Love you wormz!”
What’s in store for 2024?
Total worm domination! We want to spend as much time as we can meeting and hanging out with every worm we can find!! Are you ready to be wormed?
