Glistening Alt Pop Trio Pretty Talks Return With ‘Hurt Me’

Capturing and celebrating all things bittersweet and beautiful in the world, glistening alt pop trio PRETTY TALKS return with an immersive and intensely engaging new single Hurt Me, officially out now. Showcasing a relationship breakdown sound tracked by glossy pop and retro synths, Hurt Me is also accompanied by a raw music video that traverses youthful romance and the many harsh realities that can come with the territory, while also drawing inspiration from early 2000s and 2010s pop culture for good measure. The band answer a few questions about their new single.

How has the build-up been leading up to the release of the single Hurt Me?
Semi stressful haha, we didn’t have the date confirmed by our distributor till days before, but we put a lot of work into making the supporting content throughout the build-up! Stressful but exciting, we are so keen to share this song with the world. It was recorded pre-pandemic so we were ready to get it out.

Was the process of making your single as challenging as you thought?
Not so much, the song kind of came together by itself, the challenge was stripping back the ideas we had throughout the process till we had something we were all happy with. It was one of those songs that kept inspiring ideas.

Sonically, how would you describe your music?
Nu-hardpop, we love pop music but we also love sonically representing the emotions we write about, so if there’s something we are saying that needs a bit of aggression or pain, we will write the music to support those feelings.

Who would you consider to be the biggest influence on your music and why?
MUNA, their ability to tell stories with the soundscape they create but also how they write songs that make you want to dance. That’s something we aspire to, getting people to dance and cry at the same time.

Best piece of advice you have been given?
Work out who you are as a band, what you stand for, what you’re saying and why people should give a shit about you.

How did the band get together?
We all met at a music college in Sydney’s CBD. Liam and Tommy had originally been paired up for a group project and bonded pretty much instantly. We met Hadi, who was also studying there, at the uni bar one night. We’ve been flirting musically and intellectually ever since.

Are you looking to tour more broadly?
That’s definitely on our list of priorities, but right now we’re just committed to releasing more songs and building a live show into the audio-visual experience we want it to be.

What’s next for Pretty Talks?
We already have plans to hopefully release another single before the end of the year, so stay tuned! As well as building a fan base we can really get to know and love, some of our favourite bands have such loyal and collaborative fans, we’d love to achieve something like that.
